Flashback Friday Review: Can You Keep A Secret? by Sophie Kinsella

Flashback Fridays is a weekly meme that was created by The Autumn Review. You have to have read the book at least one year ago. You can spot light, review or re-review your selection. If you'd like to participate, please leave your link at The Autumn Review!

I have been wanting to join in this meme since I saw Autumn create it because there are so many books I read before blogging that I have wanted to review but haven't. Since my reading time is so limited lately, and there are so many great books I read years ago, I decided to start posting mini reviews for this meme every Friday. At least I'll shoot for every Friday!

Can You Keep a Secret?
Meet Emma Corrigan, a young woman with a huge heart, an irrepressible spirit, and a few little secrets:

Secrets from her boyfriend: I’ve always thought Connor looks a bit like Ken. As in Barbie and Ken.

Secrets from her mother: I lost my virginity in the spare bedroom with Danny Nussbaum while Mum and Dad were downstairs watching Ben-Hur.

Secrets she wouldn’t share with anyone in the world: I have no idea what NATO stands for. Or even what it is.

Until she spills them all to a handsome stranger on a plane. At least, she thought he was a stranger... Until Emma comes face-to-face with Jack Harper, the company’s elusive CEO, a man who knows every single humiliating detail about her.

I love Sophie Kinsella! A couple years ago I bought Remember Me? and Twenties Girl at Costco on a whim and after that I went out and bought every book she had written. Her books are always great for a laugh and putting you into a good mood. I just love the way her characters think. It's always relatable and hilarious. Emma is on a plane sitting next to a gorgeous stranger. When the she thinks the plane is going down she decides to clear her conscience with every lie she has told. Silly things like telling her boyfriend she is a size 4 instead of 6. Also work secrets though. Which turns out to be a humiliating thing when she finds out the guy she confessed to is her new boss.

Jack Harper is a sexy business man and found Emma's honesty refreshing. He actually gives her quite a bit of input into changes around the company. They spend time together and grow close. He sees a fire in her that attracts him. But he is kind of dense and then shares some secrets he shouldn't. Most of Kinsella's books are known for humor, misunderstandings, and romance. A great combination that always leaves you feeling happy. When I'm feeling down I often pick up one of her books for a re-read. It's been awhile since I've read this one so now I really want to re-read it!

"It’s the way he had a cup of tea waiting for me when I woke up. It’s the way he turned on his laptop especially for me to look up all my Internet horoscopes and helped me choose the best one. He knows all the crappy, embarrassing bits about me that I normally try to hide from any man for as long as possible… and he loves me anyway."

"Is your life ruined? Is it such a disaster for people to know the truth about you?"

  2. I like the idea of going back and reviewing books I read before I was blogging and reviewing. :) And I LOVE the sound of this book, though I've never read anything from this author before. This is why flashback posts like this are awesome...highlighting backlist titles is kind of awesome. :D Thanks for sharing...I'll have to pick this one up.

  4. OMG, this book is freaking amazeballs! It is so hilarious and you’re right, it is such a feel good book. I’ve read almost all of Sophie’s books and this one is my favorite. The Undomestic Goddess is a really good one too.

  5. What a fun meme. I have lots of books that I reviewed before the blog that I need post, I should join this but I can't do it on Friday with Friday Forecast...maybe I will have to post it on Saturday. Anyway, I have only read two books by this author and I wasn't overly fond of them as they were the shopaholics series. I think I would like this one much better.

  6. I loved this book so, so much! It always makes me laugh and it is an amazing book. Like you said, Kinsella's books always make me feel better, almost instantly. I loved I've Got Your Number also. I can't think of a book by her I didn't like, actually.
