Eighteen-year-old Archer couldn't protect his best friend, Vivian, from what happened when they were kids, so he's never stopped trying to protect her from everything else. It doesn't matter that Vivian only uses him when hopping from one toxic relationship to another - Archer is always there, waiting to be noticed. Then along comes Evan, the only person who's ever cared about Archer without a single string attached. The harder he falls for Evan, the more Archer sees Vivian for the manipulative hot-mess she really is. But Viv has her hooks in deep, and when she finds out about the murders Archer's committed and his relationship with Evan, she threatens to turn him in if she doesn't get what she wants... And what she wants is Evan's death, and for Archer to forfeit his last chance at redemption.

I love Dexter and other psychological thrillers and crazy stories LOL so I was drawn to this book. I had actually started it way back before it was being re-released as part of the new Embrace book line, but I didn't have my kindle yet so it was hard to read on my computer and I always meant to go back and finish it someday. Archer has been friends with Vivian since childhood and he wants to protect her. One day he accidentally shoves someone who hurt her down the stairs and kills him. It makes Vivian happy even though she thinks it is an accident so Archer decides to set up more "accidents" with people who have hurt Vivian and who he thinks deserve to die. He kind of has a code like Dexter. He tries to only kill bad people who really deserve it.

Archer has been in love with Vivian forever but she mostly uses him and continues to go back to abusive boyfriends. A lot of bad things have happened to her so I don't totally blame her even though she partly knew what she was doing to Archer. He has always been there for her so she has grown very dependent on him. But a new boy, Evan, enters the picture and begins a friendship with Archer. He is nice and dependable and Archer begins to enjoy spending time with him. He is someone Archer should be with and Evan wants Archer to see Vivian for the user she is or at least spend some time worrying about himself instead of Vivian.

Evan seems to cover for Archer and take his whole killing thing rather well. A bit too well would be my only complaint. I kind of felt like Evan had an insta love for Archer although Archer fell for Evan more slowly. Evan does explain at some point why he likes Archer. LOL There are some good things about Archer but...it is just a crazy love story. I like crazy though. I still at times wanted Archer with Vivian because I am a fan of best friend romances. I think both Archer and Vivian were just too messed up to really be able to make it work together. I felt bad for both of them with all the horrible things that had happened to them. When Vivian discovers Archer's secret things get really crazy. Vivian does not make the best choices. The ending is really crazy. I can really only describe this as crazy and also dark, disturbing, and depressing at times. The ending made me sad but wraps the story up well. If you enjoy a good psychological thriller then this is perfect but probably won't be for everyone.

"She's stupid, then," he said quietly.
"Why's that?"
"Because she's overlooking you for a complete prick. And judging by the way you said it, this isn't the first time she's done it."
"She's always been capable of better," he murmured.
"So I've heard. But, you know... Maybe you're the one who can do better."

Once upon a time, Kelley York was born in central California. And it's there she still resides with her lovely wife, step-daughter, and an abundance of cats, while fantasizing about moving to England or Ireland. She has a fascination with bells and animals, is a lover of video games, Doctor Who, manga and anime, and likes to pretend she’s a decent photographer. Her life goal is to find a real unicorn. Or at least write about them. Kelley is a sucker for dark fiction. She loves writing twisted characters, tragic happenings, and bittersweet endings that leave you wondering and crying. Character development takes center stage in her books because the bounds of a person's character and the workings of their mind are limitless. Her first book, HUSHED, was released by Entangled Publishing in December 2011. Her second and third books, HOLLOWED and SUICIDE WATCH, were released in 2012, and her next Entangled book, MADE OF STARS, is slated for October 1st, 2013. Visit Kelley via her
