Release Date September 17th 2013
Josie Byrne's life is
spiraling out of control. Her parents are divorcing, her boyfriend Nick
has grown distant, and her physics teacher has it in for her. When
she's betrayed by the two people she trusts most, Josie thinks things
can't get worse.
Until she starts having dreams about a girl named Jo. Every night at the same time—3:59 a.m.
Jo's life is everything Josie wants: she's popular, her parents are happily married, and Nick adores her. It all seems real, but they're just dreams, right? Josie thinks so, until she wakes one night to a shadowy image of herself in the bedroom mirror – Jo.
Josie and Jo realize that they are doppelgängers living in parallel universes that overlap every twelve hours at exactly 3:59. Fascinated by Jo's perfect world, Josie jumps at the chance to jump through the portal and switch places for a day.
But Jo’s world is far from perfect. Not only is Nick not Jo's boyfriend, he hates her. Jo's mom is missing, possibly insane. And at night, shadowy creatures feed on human flesh.
By the end of the day, Josie is desperate to return to her own life. But there’s a problem: Jo has sealed the portal, trapping Josie in this dangerous world. Can she figure out a way home before it’s too late?
From master of suspense Gretchen McNeil comes a riveting and deliciously eerie story about the lives we wish we had – and how they just might kill you.

Tandem by Anna Jarzab
Release Date October 8th 2013
Everything repeats.
You. Your best friend. Every person you know.
Many worlds. Many lives--infinite possibilities.
Welcome to the multiverse.
Sixteen-year-old Sasha Lawson has only ever known one small, ordinary life. When she was young, she loved her grandfather's stories of parallel worlds inhabited by girls who looked like her but led totally different lives. Sasha never believed such worlds were real--until now, when she finds herself thrust into one against her will.
To prevent imminent war, Sasha must slip into the life of an alternate version of herself, a princess who has vanished on the eve of her arranged marriage. If Sasha succeeds in fooling everyone, she will be returned home; if she fails, she'll be trapped in another girl's life forever. As time runs out, Sasha finds herself torn between two worlds, two lives, and two young men vying for her love--one who knows her secret, and one who thinks she's someone she's not.
The first book in the Many-Worlds Trilogy, Tandem is a riveting saga of love and betrayal set in parallel universes in which nothing--and no one--is what it seems.

Release Date August 5th 2014
Delancy Sullivan has
always known there's more to reality than what people see. Every time
someone makes a choice, a new, parallel world branches off from the
existing one. Eating breakfast or skipping it, turning left instead of
right, sneaking out instead of staying in bed ~ all of these choices
create an alternate universe in which an echo self takes the road not
travelled and makes the opposite decision.
As a Walker, someone who can navigate between these worlds, Del's job is to keep all of the dimensions in harmony. Normally, Del can hear the dissonant frequency that each world emits as clear as a bell. But when a training session in an off-key world goes horribly wrong, she is forbidden from Walking by the Council. But Del's not big on following the rules and she secretly starts to investigate these other worlds.
Something strange is connecting them and it's not just her random encounters with echo versions of the guy she likes, Simon Lane. But Del's decisions have unimaginable consequences and, as she begins to fall for the Echo Simons in each world, she draws closer to a truth that the Council of Walkers is trying to hide ~ a secret that threatens the fate of the entire multiverse.

i read ten, my first gretchen mcneil book, last week and i was disappointed since for me it read like a super cheesy teen horror flick trying too hard. sigh. so i'm not sure i'm going to pick up 3:59 right away. but i like how you picked 3 parallel universe books--i think they're going to be big in 2014!

Wendy @ Escape Into Fiction
I am not the biggest 'alternate universe' fan but mostly I think it's because I haven't found a book that actually grabs me, these three seem to be a possible one, especially 3:59 since I love Doppelgängers, my brother and I call each other doppelgänger cause we look so much alike (though I am not a boy haha).
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up, Jennifer!
Awesome picks! I am especially excited for 3:59 and Tandem. I loved Gretchen McNeil's Ten so I have a feeling I'm going to love 3:59.

I'd say of all of those, Dissonance is the one I can't wait for the most! I've had my eye on that one for several months now! I love the cover, and the idea of the book is terrific! Definitely something I'd read. I'm not sure I'll get to 3:59 or Tandem, but I hope you enjoy them! :)

These all sound really interesting - and Tandem's cover is gorgeous. Have you read When the World was flat (and we were in love) by Ingrid Jonach? That's another parallel worlds one that I think you might enjoy, I reviewed it here: http://streetmarauders.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/when-world-was-flat-and-we-were-in-love.html

Literary Love Affair
I don't know what a doppelganger is but 3:59 sounds really scary. Jo seems like a real bitch for closing up the portal. Wow I hope Josie doesn't despair because it sounds like she's in hell with no chance of getting out .
ReplyDeleteI am super super excited for both 3:59 and Tandem, but I've never heard of Dissonance, but that cover is BEAUTIFUL. Plus it sounds super interesting! Great picks! :)
ReplyDeleteRachel @ Paper Cuts
Oh yes! All of these are awesome picks. I am super excited for 3:59!
ReplyDeleteTeresa @ Readers Live A Thousand Lives
I requested an arc of 3:59, it should already be on the way and I am SO SO excited about it. I haven't read Ten yet even though I have a copy, but hopefully I'll read both back to back.
ReplyDeleteI want to read all of these, too! I am really loving the parallel worlds aspect in YA right now. I don't think I've read a single one that I didn't enjoy. *knocks on wood*
ReplyDeleteYou're into the parallel universes this week, huh? Anyhow, Tandem in particular really intrigues me! Thanks for pointing these out to me, I haven't read a parallel world story since my early teens...
