The Goddess Test meets Dexter in an edgy, compelling debut about one teen’s quest for revenge… no matter how far it takes her. Cory
Graff is not alone in her head. Bound to a deal of desperation made
when she was a child, Cory’s mind houses the Furies—the hawk and the
serpent—lingering always, waiting for her to satisfy their bloodlust.
After escaping the asylum where she was trapped for years, Cory knows
how to keep the Furies quiet. By day, she lives a normal life, but by
night, she tracks down targets the Furies send her way. And she brings
down Justice upon them. Cory’s perfected her system of survival,
but when she meets a mysterious boy named Niko at her new school, she
can’t figure out how she feels about him. For the first time, the Furies
are quiet in her head around a guy. But does this mean that Cory’s
finally found someone who she can trust, or are there greater factors at
work? As Cory’s mind becomes a battlefield, with the Furies fighting
for control, Cory will have to put everything on the line to hold on to
what she’s worked so hard to build.
I may sound a bit deranged when I say this but I love revenge! LOL I am a huge Dexter fan and I would say this book does have quite a few Dexter aspects. At 12 years old Cory was in a devastatingly awful tragic position when the Furies reached out to her. She could accept their help to get out of it but she would thus have to accept them into her life. Stuck between two horrible choices and craving the Furies to exact revenge against the wrong that was being done to her, she accepted. The Furies crave blood and killing and justice. To keep them at bay she allows them out only to kill someone who has done wrong. But the Furies are craving more and more blood and are becoming harder for her to hold back from coming out and taking her over.
Cory lost her parents years ago so moves often and lives on her own. During this last move she meets new friends and Niko. Although the friends were not at all what they seemed. I was surprised by it. I liked them and then I hated them. I wasn't too into the romance. I liked Niko but I kind of felt like he accepted a lot of this way too easy. At one point Cory even tells him to tie her up (and I don't mean in a kinky way although there is a great joke about it) and he just does it. If some new guy at school told me to do this (not in a kinky way lol) I think I would probably walk out and assume they were crazy. He is pretty accepting though so Cory obviously wants to be with him but the Furies are a part of her and she doesn't want to risk him. The Furies themselves had interesting back stories as well. I've actually never read anything about them before and this has peaked my interest to try more books about Furies.
There is a lot of action and some violent scenes. Which I like actually but thought I would mention it. I don't know why these types of stories intrigue me, I just think many of us have probably thought at one time or another that we wish we could just kill all the horrible murders and rapists. Cory gets the chance to do that so she feels good for awhile which I understand when the Furies explain some of the awful things these criminals do. The Furies eventually want more blood and Cory doubts who is guilty and who isn't because the Furies want everyone to be guilty and it gets confusing. Which is why we don't go killing murders as much as we might like to because often there isn't evidence to be 100% sure. Cory wants her life back and to have the Furies out of her head. The conclusion was really great. Cory dealt with the Furies in an unexpected way although I kind of had a tiny idea about how it would end. I recommend this if you enjoy action, revenge, blood lust, Dexter and all that good crazy stuff!
"What are you? What the hell are you?" the man blabbers, and I can't help but smile.
"There are plenty of nightmares that stalk the night. I'm yours."
"I need you to tie me up."
Niko's eyebrows shoot up, and a grin quirks one side of his mouth. "As much as I wold love to, don't you think you're a little sick for that?"

ReplyDeleteI love most books that have to do with mythology and this one sounds so good!
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, I really like shows or movies about revenge (Dexter is freaking awesome!), but I don't tend to like to read about it in books. I have enjoyed some books about revenge though, and I really want to read this one. Mostly for they mythology aspect of it and not the revenge part, but either way. Great review, it sounds like a good book.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds fantastic! Thanks for the great review!
