Vi knows the Rule: Girls don't walk with boys, and they never even think about kissing them. But no one makes Vi want to break the Rules more than Zenn...and since the Thinkers have chosen him as Vi's future match, how much trouble can one kiss cause? The Thinkers may have brainwashed the rest of the population, but Vi is determined to think for herself. But the Thinkers are unusually persuasive, and they're set on convincing Vi to become one of them...starting by brainwashing Zenn. Vi can't leave Zenn in the Thinkers' hands, but she's wary of joining the rebellion, especially since that means teaming up with Jag. Jag is egotistical, charismatic, and dangerous--everything Zenn's not. Vi can't quite trust Jag and can't quite resist him, but she also can't give up on Zenn. This is a game of control or be controlled. And Vi has no choice but to play.

Vi was caught walking in the park at night with her match, and best friend, Zenn. Since this is her 7th offense she is thrown in prison with another Baddie named Jag. She will be forced to live out the rest of her life in the Badlands and never her goodboy and best friend Zenn again. This book begins right in the middle of this world and it's consequences. There wasn't a huge introduction to the world building so at first I was a bit confused as to how life is and what rules there are.

Goodies have to plug in every night for brainwashing. Vi stopped plugging in a long time ago so she is known as a Free Thinker which is no allowed. Jag is a Baddie that was caught stealing Goodie technology. The Goodie technology as a bit confusing for me because it involved a lot of mind control so I didn't really know who was truly good or bad. Vi and Jag escape to try to reach and try to reach a place where they can get

As most of my followers would probably guess I didn't like Jag even though he seems to be a big hit with most other readers. He was a bit too much of the typical bad boy the heroine falls for way too fast. I usually always prefer the best friend and I thought Zenn was sweet. There were lots of twists and turns in this but with the mind control I didn't really know who to trust. I also wanted Vi to do more to help undo the mind control. But I'm not even sure how that works.

Vi and Zenn continue to travel to reach Gavin, who can grant Vi asylum. They are caught and escape several times. I don't want to spoil too much because I thought all the twists and discoveries was the best part but Vi is wanted for more than just her Baddie ways. I haven't read a dystopian in a while so this went a little slow but good for me. I think most dystopians fans would enjoy this. The ending I think will shock people but I actually really liked it. It was exactly what I wanted. It made me really want to check out the extra novellas that explain more about Zenn and Jag.

"I'd choose you anyway, Vi," he said that day as we lounged next to the lake. "So it's perfect that we'll be...that They matched us." He trailed his fingers through my hair. It was still long back then.
"I'd choose you," he repeated.

"I got arrested for walking in the park with a boy. Now they have me living with one. This makes absolutely no sense."

"Just because I dropped out of the Resistance doesn't mean I stopped working for our cause. I've been protecting her for a longtime. And not just becaue I want to use her for something. But because I love her."

Rating: 3/5

  8. I feel very blah about these books. Not that I wouldn't mind reading them but I would so much rather read a book I actually REALLY want to read.
