Ever since a near-death-experience on the operating table, seventeen-year-old Arianne Wilson can see dead people. Just as she’s learned to accept her new-found talents, she discovers that the boy she’s had a crush on since freshman year, Niko Clark, is a Reaper.
At last they have something in common, but that doesn’t mean life is getting any easier. All while facing merciless bullying from the most powerful girl in school, Arianne’s world is turned upside down after Niko accidentally reaps the soul of someone she loves. This sends them both into a spiral that threatens to end Arianne’s life. But will Niko break his own Reaper’s code to save her? And what would the consequences be if he did?
Arianne began seeing souls a few years ago after a near death experience and has finally built up the courage to tell her life long best friend, Ben. He takes it surprisingly well. Ben knows Ari wouldn't lie to him and he is supportive of all the crazy things she confesses throughout the book. He also always lets her talk about her major crush on Niko. Ben has a thing for Ari's sister, Carrie, so no love triangle ever develops.
Niko is Ari's substitute lab partner one day and he begins to notice her. Ari has had a crush on Niko for years. Niko has always been focused on his job and pleasing his master, Death. He has been in a bit of a depression slump and Arianne makes him happy. Soon enough she notices that he is not human but wants to figure it out on her own so he doesn't tell her he is a reaper. This seemed like a major mistake but since Ari sees souls she doesn't worry about what Niko is, just that she cares for him. As a reaper Niko is constantly escorting souls to the in between and without even realizing it he must take one that Ari cares about.
The reapers were really unique. They were actually allowed to have relationships and even allowed to tell the person what they really were. Death was usually a pretty cool boss and worried about his children. The reapers were created, lived many lives, and there is one in charge of every state. Niko has been depressed so Death had another reaper watch over him who was actually happy Niko found someone to spend time with.
The plot was very romance focused. The romance was sweet and had a great build. It isn't extremely action packed but I was very much rooting for Niko and Ari. The main enemies were a bully at school and one of the other reapers that worked with Niko. both of them plotting against Ari and Niko. Also death certificates. Niko refuses to reap a soul and then dire consequences arise. Niko is willing to give up a lot for Ari but Ari will also give up anything for Niko. I was actually a little sad and shocked with the ending and it is a bit of a cliffhanger. Waiting to see what is next for them!
"I'm trying to tell you that I see dead people. Well...technically, I see their souls."
"You coming to school all rosy-cheeked and oozing with health can only mean you did something with those souls. Did you..." She swallowed. "Eat them?"
Pearls of laughter burst out of Niko. If he'd been drinking he'd have spewed water all over Arianne.
"In all my lives, I don't ever remember being this happy."
"I had my Caretaker and minions and colleagues. I thought, what more could I ask for? Until I met you."

ReplyDeleteLOVE this cover! Sounds like a great read! I love reaper stories! :) Great review!
ReplyDeleteHey my stop for this tour is today too!
ReplyDeleteI liked this one but I was a little bit dissapointed in their relationship. Just like you said, it was sweet...but I wanted more. I also loved the reaper world Kat created and will be keeping up with this series. Thank GOD no love triangle because I am a huge sucker for the guy best friend.
The reapers in this story sound awesome. I love reapers. Great review, Suzanne and thanks for sharing. This book looks really cool. Love the cover as well!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds pretty good I love reaper books and the lore in this sounds very different. Good to know in advance that it's very romancey, though, I'll need to be in the mood for that. Great review!
ReplyDeletethat character has my name!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed this too. And I completely agree with what you said. I was a little disappointed it didn't have the action or mystery I was hoping for...but it made up for it with the sweet romance. I hope the next book is much better on the plot. But overall I enjoyed it, especially since it was about reapers. The author made them really unique, which is why I probably enjoyed it so much! Fantastic Review, Jennifer! :D

That cover is gorgeous, first of all. I love it. And I am a huge fan of reaper stories, so this one immediately captured my interest. I am glad to see that my interest is well placed. Reaping Me Softly is actually awaiting my attention from my Kindle, and I am even more eager to make time for it now, after your wonderful review. And another thing that makes me so excited for this one? A normal, naturally paced romance! Hooray! I don't read a ton of romance stories, but one that is a natural romance with some awesome reaperness thrown in? I think I can handle it.
