Bright, spunky Heather Robbins has escaped her small hometown and is anxiously beginning her freshman year of college. Rising above her rocky childhood, she’s found a place where good things are finally starting to happen: her own private apartment, refreshing college classes, and an intense attachment to a mysterious and rugged classmate, Nick Richards. But when her dreamy college life turns out to be nothing more than a wonderful dream while resting in a coma, questions threaten. Now, Heather must press forward to unlock the real past, and find the answers buried deep in her mind. What she unlocks instead is a roller coaster ride through flashbacks, embellished memories, and a whirlwind romance. And when it’s all over and she comes face to face with the truth, will she lose everything she’s fallen in love with?

Heather has just woken from a coma. While in her coma she relived her first six months of college but while also mixing up her memories with sounds and smells from the hospital. The doctor is trying to help her gain back her memories and make sense of her life. Now coming out of it she is trying to figure out what was real and if she can get back to that life or if maybe she really dreamed the entire thing.

Have you ever fallen asleep with the TV on and then dreamed about what was on TV? That is kind of like what happens to Heather during her coma. She is retelling what she remembers but people that were talking to her during the coma show up in her dreams and confuse her. What is dream and what actually happened? Heather remembers leaving behind her best friend Creed to get a fresh start at college. I was incredibly sad and connected to Creed from the beginning. He was such a great friend to Heather and she leaves him and doesn't even seem to call him or visit him. Although this is where I started to get confused because maybe she did but doesn't remember? Luckily her memories were not as badly messed up as I was afraid they might be.

Heather meets some new friends in a class group project including a dreamy The Hat guy named Nick. I just didn't connect to Nick. Not sure why exactly. He was sweet at times and I have seen a lot of love for him from others. Heather was really infatuated with him but I just didn't feel anything towards him. It took me almost until the end of the book to warm up to him. She would hear Creed talking to her and I just wanted her to be with him. lol Nick and Heather have a bit of a rocky start to their relationship. Heather was so scared to share her past with Nick which confused me. I kept expecting some new giant secret to come out but it was just her being scared of losing anyone after she already lost her mom.

I definitely could connect to Heather at certain times. Walking into your first college class is pretty intimating. Sometimes I felt like walking right out. She had an interesting take on things and when it really counted spoke her mind. The book is very much about starting college and falling in love. The coma throws an interesting twist to the book and was what drew me to the story. When you wake up and life has went on for everyone else can you really go back? Probably not. Or at least we will find out in the sequel Reaction! There was a little preview at the end and it has me intrigued plus I am looking forward to finally getting some more from Creed's character. Although I do feel bad for Nick and Heather. Mixed up communication, secrets, and then add a coma to the equation, will a college love survive that?

"Still, no one could deny the fact hat he was overwhelmingly attractive; my goodness, I could barely stand to look at him. No wonder he wears a hat, I thought to myself, to hide all of that!"

"I'm so hot," I confessed. Nick, now at the tippy-edge of the lake, gave a droll reply. "I agree, but I don't believe it's right for you to admit that you're good looking-" My embarrassment cute him off, "That's not what I meant!"

Rating: 4/5

  1. Reflection sounds like an interesting book. It would be tough to wake up from a coma and not know what had really happened and what was just a dream. Thanks for the giveaway and for the introduction to a new author (to me).

  6. I actually have this book, hearing so many great things about it! I'm so intrigued by the whole being in a coma and trying trying to remember the past and decipher what was real and what was made up. I love that so much. I wonder if there will be some kind of love triangle in the next book with Creed, Heather and Nick? I like a book that can make me think and trip me out where I don't know what is real and fake too but still be able to understand what is going on and I'm glad you weren't so confused with that part of the book! I should really start this one soon! So happy you enjoyed it. Great review, Jenn :)
