Since the car crash that took her father’s life three years ago, Emma’s life has been a freaky—and unending—lesson in caution. Surviving “accidents” has taken priority over being a normal seventeen-year-old, so Emma spends her days taking pictures of life instead of living it. Falling in love with a boy was never part of the plan. Falling for a reaper who makes her chest ache and her head spin? Not an option.
It’s not easy being dead, especially for a reaper in love with a girl fate has put on his list not once, but twice. Finn’s fellow reapers give him hell about spending time with Emma, but Finn couldn’t let her die before, and he’s not about to let her die now. He will protect the girl he loves from the evil he accidentally unleashed, even if it means sacrificing the only thing he has left...his soul.

Emma has had a difficult life since her father died two years ago. Feeling like she is crazy, being stalked and trying to avoid accidents. Finn has been like her guardian reaper. Protecting Emma is his life and sometimes it gets him in trouble when he needs to be focused on his job reaping souls. Mauve has it out for Finn and Emma and Finn will not lose Emma again. He loved her as Allison in the inbetween and now that she has a new life he will stop at nothing to keep her safe.

Finn is sweet but at times comes off as obsessive and stalkerish. But I really felt for him when he had to reap a life and when he talks about Emma. I could feel how much he truly loved her. Emma accepts Finn a bit quickly but I guess after feeling haunted for two years it would make sense for her to believe it easily. Finn may have known Emma but I felt like Emma fell for Finn really fast. I loved Emma's best friend Cash. A player but a very understanding friend and a scene stealer.

The first half of the book was rather slow for me. As the romance picked up and the reasons why Emma was involved in so many accidents were revealed, I became more invested in the story. I wished there was a little more action. I really wanted Emma and Finn to work out even though at times I may not have fully understood their relationship. I had a lot of love for the secondary characters which is usually rare for me. Finn's friend Easton was hilarious and Anaya was sweet. Any fans of reapers and romance will most likely enjoy the sweet forbidden love between Finn and Emma.

"Do you like him?" Cash finally broke into a full-on grin. "Of course you do! He saved you. Chicks love that crap. Does this mean you're actually going to go on a real date now?"

Rating: 3/5

Tara Fuller writes novels; some about grim reapers and some about witches. All of course are delightfully full of teen angst and kissing. Tara grew up in a one stop light town in Oklahoma where once upon a time she stayed up with a flash light reading RL Stine novels and only dreamed of becoming a writer. She has a slight obsession with music and a shameless addiction for zombie fiction, Mystery Science Theater, and black and white mochas. Tara no longer lives in a one stop light town. Now she lives with her family in a slightly larger town in North Carolina where they have at least three stoplights.

Excerpt

“And if I’m sent to collect her again? What then?” I looked at him, needing him to understand. “You think I could do that again? Let her die? Rip her soul from her screaming flesh?” “Better her than you.” “No!” I stepped into him, fuming. “Not better her than me. It’s my fault she’s in this position. Maeve never would’ve found her if it wasn’t for me. Hell, I’m the whole reason Maeve wants to destroy her. How am I supposed to walk away and let her suffer for a mistake I made?”
“It wasn’t your fault. You thought you were helping.” He shook his head. “Hell, you were helping. She’s alive, isn’t she? Sure, she’s got problems, but what seventeen-year-old kid doesn’t? Haven’t you ever read Judy Blume?”
I looked at Easton, his spiky sable hair blotting out the warm lavender sunrise.“You’ve read Judy Blume?” “Screw you. You’re the one haunting a high school student.”
“I’m not haunting her. I’m protecting her.”
“Look, my point is she’s going to die someday, and there will be nothing you can do to stop it,” he said. “She’ll wrap her car around tree. She’ll get cancer. If she’s lucky, she’ll grow so old her body will forget to wake up one morning.”
“I realize that,” I gritted out. “But I’ll be damned if I’ll let Maeve make her life hell until that happens, let alone be the reason she dies.” The words held so much heat I could feel them scorching my mouth.

  4. It's always good when you can love the secondary characters as much as you love the main ones. It's too bad this one didn't work better for you in the first half, but I'm happy you still enjoyed it.
