Varen Nethers is trapped in a perilous dream world -- a treacherous and desolate realm where the terrifying stories of Edgar Allan Poe come to life. Isobel Lanley, plagued by strange visions and haunted by the nightmares of Varen's creation, is the only one who can save him. Isobel knows that her only hope lies within a Baltimore cemetery. There, in the early morning hours of Edgar Allan Poe's birthday, a mysterious stranger known as the "Poe Toaster" will make his annual homage at the legendary poet's grave. Only the Poe Toaster holds the key to the way between worlds. But even greater dangers lie ahead for Isobel. An ancient evil, draped in veils of white, is watching, challenging her for Varen's affections. When Isobel finally finds Varen, he is no longer the quiet and brooding boy who once captivated her, but a dark force, powerful and malevolent.
ADD TO GOODREADS

I loved Nevermore because it was so unique and had a great romance but it was a bit confusing at times. That confusion followed into Enshadowed for me. There was also way less romance to help hold my attention. I was expecting a little bit more action and excitement after the way Nevermore ended. I thought it would start off with Izzy rushing to Baltimore to find Reynolds at Poe's grave but it took 300 pages before that even happened. Izzy was just trying to figure out how to get there for a loooong time.

The writing was still intriguing and beautiful. The dream world is interesting and creepy but I found myself confused about it. Isobel would see Varen but she and I both were unsure if he was really there or if it was just a dream. I loved that Isobel was so determined to find Varen and save him. She becomes a really strong character. Gwen continues to be a good friend to Isobel and believes in her but I missed Varen. :-(

This is a hard one to review because I don't want to spoil anything. The first 300 pages were slow for me but eventually there is a great action scene and a few things come together. A few shocking secrets about Reynolds and the dream world are revealed. But it ends with another cliffhanger! The ending was like WTF! The author loves a good shocker. LOL  I'll definitely still be reading the next book but this one just felt like a filler book for me. I don't even have any good swoon worthy quotes to share :-(

"How - how did you know?"
"Googles a verb now," Gwen said.

  1. Sorry to hear that -- Enshadowed is one of my most-anticipated of 2012.

I just finished Blood Promise and I also felt that was kind of a bridge book between one and the next. Luckily I have Spirit Bound ready and waiting and it's gooooood!

    1. Yeah I was pretty bummed. I was expecting more excitement but it was slow.

I didn't feel like any VA books were fillers. I felt like they all served a purpose and had important developments where with this book I felt like I could practically skip it. The last 100 pages is all I would need. Hopefully the last book will wrap it up perfectly.

  2. So sad... I have my hopes pretty high for Enshadowed, and when I do that, I often get so let down!
I dont want to get let down though! :(

Oh well, good review. I know its hard to review something without spoiling it!

    1. Yeah that might have been part of my problem. I was really excited to find out what happened to Varen and then when it dragged on for 300 pages before Izzy even goes to save him I was bored. Hope you enjoy it more!

  3. Aww, too bad this disappointed. I've never read this series, so I can't really relate, but seems like the momentum wasn't really kept up. Still, really good review!

    1. Yeah I felt like it had second book syndrome. Hard to keep up the momentum in a second book without wrapping everything up which has to happen in the third book. It was just a bit too slow for me.

  4. Bummer I hate when second books suffer from the filler syndrome. I have been eyeing this series for awhile but when the release of this one got pushed back, I kind of shelved it. If it has dastardly cliffhangers I will likely wait until the release of book three. I really want to check out the Poe elements, Great review, lovely!

    1. The Poe elements are very unique and interesting. I liked the first book more. This one was just slow for me. It does have horrible cliffhangers so I can understand wanting to read them all at once. They are rather long books though.

  5. No swoon worthy quotes is unacceptable -.-

You know, I think I'll pass. I'll wait until you review the third one :3 Though considering it took ages for this one to come out I have no idea when will that be... 2014?... I'll pass. Definitely pass.

Boo to lack of romance, we need more Varen and Isobel :(

    1. I know I so desperately wanted romance! It was slow and not much really happened for such a long book!
