Interview with S.A. Hunter
- What inspires you to write?
The urge, the longing, to express yourself creatively is common to most of us, whether it’s through music, art, photography, dance or writing. I write when I’ve experienced a strong reaction to something I’ve read, seen or heard and I need to explore the emotions that evoked that reaction in me. The setting will be something that compliments the mood of the story I want to tell; the characters, I always find, carry it on from there.
- Who was your favourite character to write about?
Perhaps you’d be surprised to know how tough that question is to answer! Of course, Thera, my protagonist embodies many of the qualities I would love to meet in a person, well seasoned, however, with human flaws that have the potential to become strengths. It was critical to the story that Thera have both the ability, and grace, to learn from those around her.
That being said, there are some of my secondary characters I became extremely attached to, and had great fun with, and I’ve been thinking of delving more into their back stories.
- Where is your favourite place to read?
Interesting question in winter, I have a favourite chair in our living room, where the shelves are loaded with my “keeper” books, and the fire’s casts a cosy glow- it’s quiet there (away from the TV). In summer, I love to be on our summer-place deck right on the beach.
- What is your next project?
A sequel to Elanraigh: The Vow is currently underway. It’s a little harder to be disciplined about words-on-page right now, with the distractions of spring. However, since the ocean and mountain views, the eagles, the swash of waves all figure in my Elanraigh settings…perhaps I may call it research?
Is there anything else you would like the readers to know?
As a writer my goal is that when you as a reader pick up my book to enjoy you will be immersed in my novel’s world in all its detail: you taste the food, smell the air and live the lives of the characters-you are moved by their loves, shaken by their terrors, and can shed tears of joy for their happiness. When the book closes, you know that your life has been enriched. To create that affect on a reader is my forever goal.
Thank you for this opportunity to visit with you all!
