Claire's heart is torn between her first vampire love, Dmitry, and the Blood Mate, Arrick, that she is eternally bonded to with a powerfully deep and emotional connection. A vengeful vampire is haunting her steps, after Claire killed their mate. An ancient evil threatens to rip her world apart. With the danger of war looming on the darkening horizon, will Claire find the strength to fight back and protect those she loves? Even if it means embracing the darkness inside her? Is it worth it to become the evil she fears, in order to destroy it?
Claire and Arrick are headed to Naos where Claire's birth parents live. She has finally learned the truth of her existence and is readjusting all over again to a new family. She is a rare born vampire with special abilities she has yet to discover. With the other royals upset at her running away and The Dark rising to power, Claire must prepare for war. Eli begins training her and she has a sparing partner Bennett that pushes her buttons. Bennett was really snarky and fun. I enjoyed his scenes and their lessons together. They began building an interesting friendship.
Claire is also still dealing with her mixed feelings over Dmitry, who she has left behind, and her blood mate Arrick. Arrick feels everything that she feels so she can not hide the feelings she still holds for Dimitry from him. I was disappointed there wasn't more of Dmitry because I really grew to love his character in the first book. Arrick does continue to grow on me with his dedication and love for Claire. But he has watched and loved Claire her whole life where as Claire just met him a few weeks ago. When Arrick takes off on a reconnaissance mission, the palace is under attack from The Dark. Claire must learn to use her unique vampire strength and powers to save the family she has just discovered.
"I know it will take time. It is hard for me to know I must share you, even a little, but I feel everything. Any time you are around me and something reminds you of him it's like a knife in my gut."
