It's all she's ever wanted to be, but it couldn't be further from her grasp... Dana Hathaway doesnt know it yet, but shes in big trouble. When her alcoholic mom shows up at her voice recital drunk, again, Dana decides shes had enough and runs away to find her mysterious father in Avalon: the only place on Earth where the regular, everyday world and the captivating, magical world of Faerie intersect. But from the moment Dana sets foot in Avalon, everything goes wrong, for it turns out she isn't just an ordinary teenage girl, she's a Faeriewalker, a rare individual who can travel between both worlds, and the only person who can bring magic into the human world and technology into Faerie. Dana finds herself tangled up in a cutthroat game of Fae politics. Someone's trying to kill her, and everyone seems to want something from her, from her newfound friends and family to Ethan, the hot Fae guy Dana figures she'll never have a chance with...until she does. Caught between two worlds, Dana isn't sure where she'll ever fit in and who can be trusted, not to mention if her world will ever be normal again.

Why I Pick It Up: Looking for a new fairy series to enjoy. So far I have only really liked The Iron Fey series. Also beautiful cover! I'm always a sucker for covers.

Why You Should Read It: A great fairy series indeed! Up there with the Iron Fey for me! Hot guys also which is always a plus

Dana is sixteen and sick of living with her drunk mother. She decides to find her father, who is a powerful fae that her mom has kept from her all her life. She travels to Avalon where the fae that are between the mortal world and faerie world live. When she arrives she is immediately abducted by her Aunt and finds out that she is a powerful faeriewalker that is wanted as a political and dangerous tool. She is a rare half breed that can travel from the mortal world into the fairy world also bringing in technology which no other fae can do. Then she is also kidnapped from her Aunt, by a hot unseelie guy named Ethan who is also trying to protect her and use her. His sister Kimber, and him were asked by their dad to keep an eye on her and persuade her to their side.

She returns to her dad but realizes maybe living with a drunk mother wasn't as bad as being hunted in Avalon. I love her bodyguard, a Knight named Finn. He is hired by her dad to protect her. She also wants to protect herself so Finn's son Keane helps her with self-defense lessons. A bad boy attitude doesn't stop Dana from enjoying the full body contact sport. Her Aunt has definitely not given up and continues to come after Dana. Lots of adventure and a very unique fairy story. I am team Keane and hope he is in the rest of the books because I will definitely keep reading for him. Ethan wasn't really my type and I found Keane's sarcasm and quips to be extremely entertaining.

"I can see why you opted out of Knight training,” I countered. “They’d have ‘accidentally’ killed you before you made it to adulthood."

 Rating: 4/5 faeries!

Hollowmen
(The Hollows #2)
by Amanda Hocking

Published November 10th 2011
Pages Not Listed Kindle Version

the sequel to Hollowland....

After six months in the quarantine, Remy finds out things are much worse than she feared. Her plans to escape come with a heavy cost, and she realizes that zombies aren't the worst of her problems.

Why I Picked This Up: Amanda Hocking! Loved the first one!

Why You Should Read It: Great action and romance! Very addicting!

OMG I was dying for this and then HIGHLY disappointed by parts that really made no sense! I'm going to try to keep the spoilers down but a few will probably be seen, just a warning!

So we ended in the first book with Remy locked up in the hospital of the quarantine. Six months later Remy is still stuck in that hospital undergoing gruesome and extreme medical tests and surgeries with no anesthetic. Zombies have become smarter and they break in and all the doctors and everyone runs out leaving Remy cut wide open on the table. She sews herself up(Yeah!) and runs out. She runs into Tatum in the hall and he explains that everyone has evacuated in small groups and that they are the last group of around 8 people. This is where one of my this made no sense RANT #1 comes in! WHY DID LAZLO LEAVE WITHOUT HER! He swore he would not leave the quarantine without her but he just took off and now she has no idea where he and Harlow went!

The zombies disease is able to communicate with other zombies without being in close proximity. When one zombie finds a person it sends out for all the zombies to come! So the new plan is for all the people to break up into small groups and just run away north to where it is cold. Zombies don't like the cold(Who does?) so they have plans to head to Canada. Remy's group includes her mad scientist doctor, Daniels, an army guy Boden and some other new characters really not worth mentioning. Before they head north Remy insists on going to the compound where she sent Max and Blue six months ago.

Boden, the quarantine army worker and basically head of the group, agrees hoping they can find more weapons because they are almost all out of bullets. So they venture out with the usual zombie attacks and fighting amongst themselves. Remy eventually finds Max and even Ripley. Then randomly they also find a radio where Lazlo's voice is coming through. NOW ENTER RANT #2! Lazlo is radioing out but he won't wait for Remy and won't decide a place to meet. They don't say they love and miss each other. It is just an awkward pointless talk. Why the hell was he even radioing out to people if he didn't want to wait to meet up with anyone?! THAT IS ALL HE HAS TO SAY TO HER AFTER SIX MONTHS! WTF!

The rest of the story consists of Remy and her new gang heading north and slowly being killed off by zombies. Lot's of action but lacking a lot of the emotion of the first book. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed Boden but I just felt like it was handled poorly and that there was no real closure to Lazlo. RANT #3! REMY SHOULD BE LOOKING FOR HIM! Just ridiculous. So highly disappointed by the tiny one page of Lazlo we get! I am sure hoping for another book because I was not at all pleased with the way this concluded. Still an enjoyable read and I finished it all in one day. It was really short and I so hope for more. Just felt like many details were not explained or fully developed.

"I know what happened in there,” I said finally. “And I know why it happened. But it all amounted to nothing. So I’m sorry if I’m still a little pissed off about it.”

"You have a date you have to go to in Canada, remember?”
"I won't forget it."

“Vivisection isn’t exactly the kind of thing you can just apologize for.”

Evernight
by Claudia Gray

Published Feburary 10th 2009
327 Pages

Bianca wants to escape. She's been uprooted from her small hometown and enrolled at Evernight Academy, an eerie Gothic boarding school where the students are somehow too perfect: smart, sleek, and almost predatory. Bianca knows she doesn't fit in. Then she meets Lucas. He's not the "Evernight type" either, and he likes it that way. Lucas ignores the rules, stands up to the snobs, and warns Bianca to be careful—even when it comes to caring about him. "I couldn't stand it if they took it out on you," he tells Bianca, "and eventually they would." But the connection between Bianca and Lucas can't be denied. Bianca will risk anything to be with Lucas, but dark secrets are fated to tear them apart . . . and to make Bianca question everything she's ever believed.

Why I Picked This Up: Needed vampires! Reviews said it was good and many goodreads friends loved it.

Why You Should Read This: Interesting Vampire story with some hot characters. Very Hex Hall with vampires. This came out first but I read Hex Hall first so I felt like they were very similar.

Bianca is upset her parents are making her attend Evernight Academy. They plan to teach there and believe it will be a great opportunity for her. She longs to run away and even plans on pretending to do so because she wants her parents to change their minds. But she runs into Lucas who hates the school as much as she does. The first 100 pages mostly consist of her thoughts of him. She is dying to see him again but when she does he ignores her. Very slow beginning. She has some rude roommates and a lot of stuck up classmates. She longs for Lucas.

I didn't see much in Lucas at first. Why she so badly wanted him I didn't really understand. She makes friends with a new hot student Balthazar whom I loved! As the story progress we discover many hidden secrets about Evernight and it's students. Not everyone is who they seem to be. With one of the student's stalking Bianca's friend Raquel, Bianca is sure there is evil at the school. This book has quite a few surprises! I accidentally spoiled myself on the first one while reading reviews so I want to keep quiet for people that haven't read it but I thought it made for an interesting twist. The second surprise I totally saw coming but enjoyed. The end of the book picks up with some action. While not totally loving this book I found it enjoyable and plan to continue in the series with hopes of a bit more excitement and of course for more Balthazar!

"I apologized to her once for spending less time with her, but she blew it off. "You're in love. That makes you actually kind of boring to people who aren't in love. You know, the sane ones."

"People get stupid when they're in love; people want what they can't have; and the years between ages twelve and eighteen always, always suck."

RATING: 3/5 Fangs!

Nevermore
by Kelly Creagh

Published August 31st 2010
543 Pages

Cheerleader Isobel Lanley is horrified when she is paired with Varen Nethers for an English project, which is due—so unfair—on the day of the rival game. Cold and aloof, sardonic and sharp-tongued, Varen makes it clear he’d rather not have anything to do with her either. But when Isobel discovers strange writing in his journal, she can’t help but give this enigmatic boy with the piercing eyes another look. Soon, Isobel finds herself making excuses to be with Varen. Steadily pulled away from her friends and her possessive boyfriend, Isobel ventures deeper and deeper into the dream world Varen has created through the pages of his notebook, a realm where the terrifying stories of Edgar Allan Poe come to life. As her world begins to unravel around her, Isobel discovers that dreams, like words, hold more power than she ever imagined, and that the most frightening realities are those of the mind. Now she must find a way to reach Varen before he is consumed by the shadows of his own nightmares.

Why I Picked It Up:  Heard good reviews and always looking for a great paranormal romance.

Why You Should Read It:  Great romance! Very unique paranormal story and you learn about Edgar Allen Poe

Isobel must work on an English project with Varen. Varen wears black, has a lip ring, and is known as a freak among most of his peers. Blonde haired, popular, cheerleader Isobel can not believe her luck that she is paired with him. Varen wants to do the project on his favorite author, Edgar Allen Poe. Spending time with Varen, Isobel definitely starts to see another side to him. When her jealous boyfriend and friends start picking on him she comes to his rescue. Realizing there is more important things than popularity Isobel continues to stand her ground while her ex-boyfriend and ex-friends make her life miserable. An intriguing relationship begins to form around Isobel and Varen and you can't help but root for them. Varen has secrets and a history more unique than you thought and has more depths than you imagined.

Now on to the weird paranormal aspect of this book. The love story is wonderfully told. But surrounding the relationship is Edgar Allen Poe. We learn about Poe's writing, history, and story throughout this story. His suspicious death is questioned during their research project. When Poe came back from missing in the last few days of his life he was heard calling out to a man named Reynolds. Isobel is beyond shocked to learn this fact because she has been having strange dreams involving a man named Reynolds telling her that Varen is in danger. Varen has been swept up into a dream world and the dream demons don't want to let him go. Isobel is determined to save him. An incredibly different story that also gave me an opportunity to learn a ton about Poe that I never knew. Also with a huge cliffhanger that will leave you demanding the next book.

"You're really a blond," she said, her tone just short of accusatory.
"And if you tell anyone, I will come to you in the night and smoke your everlasting soul.

"Gwen," he said in acknowledgement.
"Your darkness-ship," she returned with a bow.

RATING: 4/5   Poe Ravens!

On The Fringe
by Courtney King Walker

Published October 19th 2011

Claire is struggling to overcome the murder of her childhood friend and secret crush, Daniel. Everyone else seems to be moving on with their lives, but she's still trying to cope. The fact that she finds herself alone and drowning on her 16th birthday isn't helping. Neither is thinking she sees Daniel's face in murky water as she mysteriously resurfaces. But something happened during those four and a half minutes that will make her realize it was not just her imagination. As Claire and Daniel try to grasp a possible reconnection, other grudge-holding beings have plans of their own. Now, the two of them have to decide if their fleeting relationship is worth the possibility of Claire being trapped on the fringe forever. Beautifully told, On the Fringe intertwines fresh ideas about devotion, revenge, and the consequences that come with life and death.

Why I Picked It Up:  Cover Love! Beautiful cover! It caught my eye when I was scanning goodreads book giveaways. I read the summary and I have been in the mood for some more ghost stories since I finished The Mediator series by Meg Cabot.

Why You Should Read It:  Beautiful love story. Literally brought tears to my eyes.

Claire and Daniel have been friends since they were kids. But now she feels like it is more than friendship but doesn't feel she can tell him since he is her best friend's brother. He is also her brother's best friend. Daniel has noticed Claire lately and can't help but all of a sudden feel nervous around her. Now Daniel will never have the chance to tell Claire how he feels. During a party he attends, a fight breaks out and someone shoots him.

Switching POV's between Claire and Daniel we learn the beautiful friendship these two shared since they were five years old. Daniel just can't move on without Claire. Following her around we learn about their past and the now present danger Claire faces. A strange ghost force is bent on revenge against Daniel by taking it out on Claire. A past mistake is literally haunting Daniel. Some shocking surprises and a very heartbreaking love story. Totally own up to crying(as usual) during this one.

"Your not going to watch me sleep are you?” I teased. “Not like some creepy ghost-stalker?”

RATING: 4/5 Ghosties!
